  • Pickup that hangs from a spring?

I've been thinking recently about how a pickup would sound, if it was hung in a guitar by 4 springs. Each spring holding a corner.

Kind of like how in spring reverb tanks, they have springs coming out on each corner of the tank so that the insides don't touch the outsides.

This is all assuming that you have fairly strong springs that can hold up a pickup with out it bouncing around and making the signal volume go up and down. I just wonder, how would it affect the tone of the guitar.

I hope this all makes sense, and I was also wondering if anyone has ever thought of this. I know it's not practical, but It is very interesting...

There is a related idea I know about. This video of my friend playing my Pig90s live is an Italia guitar. The whole pickguard assembly is molded with rounded edges and sits slightly inside a big rout in the guitar; the full pickguard is suspended by springs! Not really sure why that I can see. I made a horrible mistake by trying to remove the guard silding it out under loosened strings and it broke off most of the small wooden posts in the guitar that I had to glue back one by one.

You would probably get a lot of howling feedback.

You wont get reverb unless the pickup can pick up the sound of the springs.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

I think that pickguard might have had something like that idea in mind, it did have a different kind of feel to the tone, never seen a floating pickguard before. Yeah a pickup by itself would probably feedback. High volume players have to deal with that in stadium rock, guys like Vai stuff foam around the bobbins to keep the pickup from vibrating in the ring; I had that happen with a pickup I used to make, real weird to see a pickup vibrating in the ring!

A lot of those old Italian guitars had raised pick guards like that. Maybe they were trying to isolate the pickups from the body? Who knows.

Here's a Wandre Teenager. Wandre Pioli made some freaky cool guitars.

Yeah, but they are kind of copying the old Wandre DAVOLI guitars.

              Like this:

              Italia

              You can see the inspiration.

Eastwood even has a copy of one.
