  • T top gauss

Does anyone have a good average gauss reading for a late 60s T top? I assume these were all A5 short mags, but I can't seem to find a definitive source (using a non messed-with example) of just how charged these mags were. Full? Partial? Weak? Anyone? Thanks!

There were several versions of magnets used. The early ones were shorter but as thick as regular PAF magnets, later ones were shorter, slightly less wide and thinner. These smaller ones I've found often don't hold their charge over all those years. Somewhere I have one of the small ones thats not in a pickup. I have an early one with the bigger magnets buts its in a guitar at the moment.

I'd be VERY interested to know what the gauss readings are at the screw poles and slugs, if you can do that without too much of a pain in the ass!

          .....

OK, skinny tiny little TTop magnet version 580-600 gauss south side, 580 North.
I don't think it makes any sense to measure the pickup poles on the two I have, if you're not using the exact same alloys you wont get the same results there, most commercial parts are way more permeable than vintage parts....

Just found one of the earliest version, regular thickness but TTop shortness length:
525 north, 545 north. Neither of these has been recharged and are alnico 5.

Thank you! I mentioned the poles as I don't know if yours were covered or not and don't want to be a pain. So thanks again - that's pretty middle of the road for A5. Kind of low really. Neat!

Well those things have been around what 40-50 years, the skinny little ones sometimes degauss almost completely, I was kinda surprised it measured that high. Even then that alnico isn't what we get today, was made in America....
