That doesn't mean anyone is going to pay that price for that pickup. Old guitar parts seem to bring out the greed in people.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

That happens up here on Craigslist too. It seems like every speed demon pickup I come across is broken anyway.

...as the great P. T. Barnum so appropriately said it: "...there's one born every minute...", of course, with the internet that's probably up to "...ten every minute..." by now.
...and the Devil said: "...yes, but it's a DRY heat!"

I dont know much about these pickups. What's the problem with the auction? Is he asking too much?

I guess they might be worth $229 to someone... or maybe not. I don't think so.

I was gonna buy them , but then I clocked the $200 he's charging for a product weighing 200g to be delivered to the UK! I wasn't aware that NASA offered a Space Shuttle courier delivery service?

                ...

Well these things ain't gonna be getting cheaper as time goes on. Belwar you ought to pick one of these up to look over, they are solidly filled with high temp wax, its a big ass alnico magnet up on its side somehow bonded to a baseplate, with a rather short coil wound wound it with fiber bobbins. They can sound real good in the right hands, but they are an odd size and probably don't fit anything other than the guitars they came in....

Actually,it's not uncommon to find nice three pickup model Speed Demons for sale at around $475-$500. I just saw a really nice one pickup model for sale at $300.$229 for one pickup is pretty ridiculous.

If they go for that much, then somebody needs to start making them. They aren't very well built, so I'd guess that the surviving models are rare if they work. It's a single coil with a magnet and a steel plate encased in aluminum.

I'd bet if someone started making them there would be little interest. That's not to say they aren't nice sounding pickups or anything, just that they would have a limited market and they don't fit into any existing guitars.

Personally I like stuff like the old gold foil pickups better than Strat pickups, but that's me. Most guitar players seem to think there are only two or three tones you can get from a guitar, and they are tones that have been used to death.

I think parts like this sell for a lot of money only because they are old, not because they are in demand.

A lot of these old pickups are made pretty funky. I have an old Mosrite pickup that uses hex nuts as keepers!
