  • Ultra hot Humbucker question

I want to wind a ultra hot pickup like Gibson Dirty Finger but more bassy. Intend to play metal and hardrock. I think the combined resistance of the pickup must be around 16k and i will use cermic magnets. But iam really confused about the wire no., 43 or 44awg?
I never used 44. I dont how difficult will that be. But iam not sure 8k in a coil get can be fit by 43 awg wire. Also they sound differently. Which is better 43 or 44 ?

I wind a high output with 43 and I can get 8.5 -ish per coil, but it's tough to do. Also, at about 15K or so, you really start to lose some significant highs. I've decided to stop at the 14.4 mark to avoid a nasal tone. Covering is also going to make a difference. Mine is covered, so uncovered it may work out better, as you've retain more highs. All you can do is try it. If is doesn't work, remove some windings and use those coils as a development base for something else. Sometimes the happy accidents are better than the thing you planned for.

Up in the high output wind range, you are losing not just highs but lows too, and getting mostly midrange. To add bass, the best solution is a ceramic or (my preference) Alnico 8 magnet.

You'll notice Dirty Fingers have tall coils, important if you're trying to get high output with any kind of clarity. They also have 3 ceramic magnets in there pretty sure. I have a set I intended to back engineer at some point. They're also copper tape wrapped. I've only tried them in a bench test guitar but they sounded pretty good to me. I'd stick with 43 or 43 heavy build.

I kind of wish I kept my old DirtyFingers. They were surprisingly nice sounding pickups. Not at all dark like you expect from something that's 16K (like a JB).

I posted a recording made with them here:

All the guitar tracks were a DF in the bridge position on a Strat style guitar.

I can take Extech readings off the set I have if anyone wants to know what they are, these are an early set, not the modern ones.

Sure! I had an early set as well, taken from one of the models they were first introduced in.

Ok guys what size do you suggest for dimmension of a coil. That can easily fit atleast 8k in that from 43 awg wire ?
