A 5-lb spool of PE from MWS is typically about $160, yes. Luckily they're just down the road from me so it usually arrives the next day.

The wire was $150 , plus $160 for the shipping , I can ship a guitar and case for less than that..

I got mine from Electrowind. Unfortunately, I lost the address and contact number. There is this lady there named Natalie who was very nice and helpful.

I am trying to find out from my sister-in-law their contact numbers so I can forward it to you.

I tried MWS for wire Ruel, they wanted $160US for shipping 5lbs of wire to Australia so be aware that postage might be rather expensive , Whitmore on the other hand were very reasonable with shipping , make sure you get a shipping quote first.

I use 800 grade abrasive paper for cleaning up bobbins edges , I do this on every bobbin I use , it's a good habit to get into.

I got a quote from them and I too found out that the overall cost would be too much for my needs. I am not yet into pickup winding for commercial purposes. It is just a hobby, at least for now. I asked them for the minimum order possible for 43 wire and they quoted 6lbs. I don't know why. So I really do not need that much.

I found out the culprit that results to my breakages. It is the spool of the 43 wire that I have and that's been lying around for some time now. I have about 400 people working under me at any given time and I asked one of my subordinates a couple of years back to buy my the wire. He is an electronics technician, so he knew where to get hold of these things. He was able to get a 1lb spool of 43 wire. Problem is, he is not with us anymore and I didn't ask where he got the wire.

Wire in my country is far too cheap.

A few months ago i bought 1 lb of 42 and 1 lb of 43 gauge in a local store and spent less than 20 dollars in both rolls.

(Thats 10 lbs/pound and a bit more for AWG 43)

Copper related stuff is very cheap in Chile, since copper mining is the country's main economic issue. That's why every house in our country also has copper pipes, hehehehe.

If someone wants some wire, maybe we can arrange to ship a roll there.

                  Greetings,
                  Ben

Good for you, man! Copper mining too is big business here in the Philippines (or it used to be). The problem is, nobody is making wires with the correct sizes for my pickup winding needs. I remember asking a local wire and cable manufacturer for #42 magnet wire and the lady at the other end asked..." What do you need this small size for?" " Nobody buys them, so we don't make them."

I wonder what the cost of shipping a spool of wire from your part of the world to mine would be? (Plus the cost of the merchandize, of course).

I might be interested in such an offer. Any idea what shipping would be for 10 lbs of the stuff sent the the UK? How much would you want for your handleing fee?

                            wire quality

you might want to get a sample before you order a ton of it. I have a nice 20lb spool of 43 PE from Korea. You'd think Korean wire would be pretty good right? This stuff is so pooryly made any tension at all on the winder and the coil shorts out. I've heard the same thing about Chinese wire. All magnet wire is not created equal. Its really a shame that in the US only one company makes PE anymore. The other good companies quit making it because the process is environmentally dirty and guess they weren't selling enough of it to warrant cleaning up their act. The stuff still made is pretty good but not as good as the old Essex wire, which was consistenly made to one dimension, like 42 was almost always .0027" the current wire is more like .00265" You'd think a small change like that wouldn't matter but it sure as shit does....

Sure, i was thinking about what Possum says, maybe you whould take a sample before ordering my wire. I don't have precision callipers to measure the wire and check its consistency. I haven't had any problem with shorts and regular wire-cutting, but i can't assure how good it is. My pickups sound fine to my ears (and my customers), hehe.

Tomorrow i'm going downtown to buy some tolex and adhesives and will ask in the "Wire-shop" for a half-pound sample (or less). I think it won't be that expensive to ship a small sample overseas (maybe 5 or 10 dollars).

If someone is interested in shipping some wire, we can talk by email. My address is jara.benjamin (a) gmail (d) com

I would say that unless you are doing some sort of mod, or wire gauge combo, don't plan on selling or using the coil. What i would do, would be to solder it together, finish your coil, then use it as a practice coil. When i first got my winder, I wound at least 20 coils to about 2000 turns, then pealed it all off, and wound it up again. Think of it as a recycling and learning combo. This way I wasn't wasting wire, and I got some experience at timing my TPL, and soldering up lead wires. You just have to be aware of when your solder joint is coming up, if you solder breaks together.
