  • Speaking of IDing Gibson pickups, can you help this noob out?

    Hello,

A while back, a friend of mine gave me an old Gibson Melody maker that was kinda hacked up to put humbuckers in. He found it in a barn, and it sat in his garage for about 5 years. I toook it to a guy who knows guitars, and he placed it somewhere in the early 60's. For me, this is my first electric guitar, and is what has got me started into building electric guitars, as well as building pickups.

My question is this, What kind of pickups are these?

If you are interested, here is a link on my site about this particular guitar:

Any kind of information on these pickups would be greatly appreciated.

Awesome!! Thank you Possum! You are Da man!

Yes, I love how they sound. Whenever I take this to the local music store, the guys there want to play the guitar, not only does it sound great, but it plays great too.

Mike, cool MM. I have one that's similar. It looks like yours was probably refin'd and used to be the tobaccoburst color, based on the size of the heel. They're great guitars for the money -- mine is routed for a 'bucker in the bridge position. Reading your site, you state that one of the T-Tops rates around 8.5k -- if that's from the same era as your neck pickup, I'd hang on to it as T-tops from that time (late 60s) were usually in the 7.5 range. I bet it rips!

          Thanks Crypto!

Yeah I'm hanging on to it for sure.

Now that you mention it, I'm a bit curious as to which pickup goes where. So should the 8.5k pickup be the bridge pickup or the neck?

Like I said on the site, there was no pickguard and the electronics were dangling free by the wires. Given the state it was in and not knowing its history, I have no idea if any of it was correct.

I would keep the higher output pickup in the bridge, unless you ride on the neck most of the time.
