Is RS not selling these anymore? If not, then is there another good source for aged covers? (Yes, I should do it myself but I've tried it and I just don't have the knack, especially making those string "lines".)

Good point....Does anyone have any tips for creating string lines when aging covers?
I'm thinking that you put strips of tape (or something else) on the cover where you don't want the acid to eat away at the plating. I know you have to rinse off the solution with cold water as soon as you're done dipping it to stop the chemical reaction.
Maybe Sam Lee Guy or Spence will jump in
Spence makes some nice aged covers.

For the lines, you could use a cloth wheel on a dremel with no polish. let friction do the work

They're still making them, a customer just had RS send me a pair to use. They look rather hokey to me...http://www.SDpickups.com

Polish the string lines with one of these.
To age covers take off shine with a super fine 3M pad. Then you can dip in Ferric Chloride, expose to Muriatic acid fumes or ozone fumes. I prefer ozone as it is not as nasty at the other two but it takes a few days. Then even out the look with some rubbing compound applied by hand. Then lightly polish in the string marks with the flex-i-file. This is just one many ways to do it.Last edited by JGundry; 02-20-2010, 05:14 PM.

Who's RS?It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

check with them, I was sent these this thursday. I think string marks look stupid and yet to see anyone do them that looks authentic. When I use raw covers on my own les pauls I never get that kind of look at all. Alot of vintage PAF covers look like this attachment and not like the "skunk stripes" everyone seems to be copying off everyone else ;-)http://www.SDpickups.com

I recommend them to all my PAF customers, but man, I sure won't recommend these aged covers. If I get a chance I'll take a photo of the ones sent to me for my customer....http://www.SDpickups.com

Hmmmm, I don't see aged bucker covers on their site anymore. They are a good company, their Les Paul vintage pots are the best in the business.http://www.SDpickups.com
