For small orders of magnets, this e-bay shop is the one you're looking for:

Addiction-FX Guitar and Sound items - Get great deals on Humbucker Bobbins, Alnico 3 Rods items on eBay Stores!

"In case you need to get ahold of Dennis at Addiction FX, you can call him at (800) 279-7600. If you leave a message, be sure to mention that you're calling Addiction FX."

    or e-mailing his daughter: addictionfxgirl@yahoo.com

Even though the magnets he sells are from China, they're pretty good sounding, I can vouch for that. Three of my own best sounding guitars actually have his magnets in them.

I'm pretty sure he can get you those A8 rods you're looking for.

      HTH,
I have used the Addiction A8 Bar Magnets, and they sound great.
      I've never seen A8 Rods.
I don't know anyone that sells A8s in Rod Sizes.
I think they would sound good in Bass Application.
I bet they will have to be special ordered.
Shea Sells some A6 Rods in .205 diamater.
      Good Luck,

Thanks - I've bought stuff from Addiction FX before, but I checked before and (at least at the time) they weren't offering any A8 rods, just the HB bar magnets.

A friend of mine got some A9 mags from him, even though he's not offering'em for sale.

As I've said before: just ask him! He's a hell of a nice guy, and the worst it can happen is having him say "sorry, I can't get'em".

But, chances are, because he buys A LOT from his suppliers, if he asks for something, he gets it.

          Whatyagottalose, uh?

On a side note: A8 rods? With the string pull they would generate, specially with such a high mass a bass string has, I don't think the end result will be worthwhile, comparing with other designs to get the same sound. If I was you, I'd use small neo mags with slugs over'em. Changing the iron content of the slugs and/or the lenght will tune up the high frequency content and the string pull generated... and what about using the tone control...?

Just kidding, man. Happy mag hunting!

Getting string pull to a vanishingly low level has become a big priority for me.

Me too! It is one of those zen things... the best sounding guitars have no pickups in them....

AZ Industries in Ash Flat, AK sold me a bunch of A8 rods years back.

                  Thanks.
You might want to change your link to Ash Flat, AR.
AK is Alaska, AR is for Arkansas. lol
I live here in Arkansas and I've never heard of that place.
I'll have to check them out!

Stop using rod magnets. Charging steel poles or a blade with a bar magnet will give less string pull. I use very strong neo magnets in some of my pickups, but at the poles they read less than a Strat pickup.

                      Very good.

They also sound quite different with only one string.

I don't use rods; I stopped maybe 15 years ago.
