Elektrisola 42 AWG 42P155CL?

Last night I started shopping for some more wire for my tele project. I searched Ebay but only found 42 heavy formvar which I already have (Mojotone).

I found a surplus site selling Electrisola 42AWG clear at $14 a lb. Unfortunately no other technical details listed about the wire or insulation. They are listing 4-5lb rolls so it is a $70 roll of the dice. Anyone have any idea what this might be and would it be suitable for tele and other single coil pickups?

Beyond Stew-Mac I have not found 43 gauge anywhere in smaller quantity or a reasonable price. Any leads? I see vendors in the FAQ's for wire. What are their minimums like?

The P155 I think tells you that this is polysol.

BAE Wire often sells HF on Ebay in small spools, I bought a 4 spool box of the stuff for a good price. No matter what you're still stuck with the price of copper. I was told alot of vintage surplus wire has been melted down in these last few years to salvage the copper....

Do you do anything with your old wire, say if you cut it off a pickup? I've been saving it in a bag. I wasn't sure if people recycle it... but coper is copper, right?

Yeah, BAE usually has some better offerings... you have to check from time to time. They don't have any 42 listed on their eBay store at the moment.

The only thing I found from BAE on Ebay was heavy formvar which I already have. I'm looking for 42 and 43 single build in around 1-2lb rolls. Ebay is dry right now (as of last night anyway). I'll keep looking but was looking for an alternate source.

The Electrisola 42 I found at a electronics surplus place (somehow that sounds like trouble) can be had in a 4 lb roll but I'm trying to get a handle on what it is first. $14 a pound is certainly in my budget range and if it would work well for single coils, might be worth picking up for the $56 it would cost. Might be worth it even if I just burn through it trying to improve my winding skills.

I just don't know enough about this subject but I'm trying to get up to speed as quickly as I can so I don't sound completely stupid with these questions.

I've burned through a great deal of past posts where you talk about the inconsistency of wire from roll to roll. There were some positive mentions about polysol here and there for single coils. I'm slowly figuring out some of the differences between some of the terms but it is still a bit fuzzy. My old brain isn't as quick as it once was (it seems to remind me everyday of that).

So any advice and light you are willing to shed is always appreciated.

4 lbs of 42 is nothing, you'll blow through that in no time and be glad you didn't spend more learning the ropes.

I sent an email Surplus Sales of Nebraska about a week ago asking them about this exact 42 awg wire. Bob Grinnell responded within an hour or two and said they round the amount up or down to match the factory weight if I type "5" in the quantity box.

I called them yesterday and the woman I spoke with told me that if I put in the order for 4lbs, I would get a roll close to that (somewhere around 4.25lb). They said they would email me if there was a substantial difference in weight and it would cost more.

So I went ahead and ordered this morning. I'll have to keep searching for a source for 43 AWG single build as I don't need 5lbs nor do I want to spend $250 at Mojo for it.

Comes from the UK. It's a polysol coating and so far it's worked great for me.

Copper Magnet / Enameled & Bare Wires

I got 5 lbs of 42 from them a while back. It was heavy build though, which they didn't mention.

Damn, wish I knew this before I ordered. Back to plan #1. Fatter and taller coils. With two rolls of heavy, I see many fat coils in my future. Time to start trying other magnets besides Alnico 2.

I have rolls of wire I never use, like a big roll of 44, 45H, and 46. But I like to have wire for trying new ideas.

The 42H is good as long as you don't want to wind a lot of wire on a coil. It gets way too big. It sounds nice for neck pickups.
