  • Vintage PAF (1974) Story

    Hi folks,

Yesterday a friend gave me a broken 1974 pickup took from a Gibson SG. I know they're quite valuable when they're not modified, but this one was heavily modified.

The top cover was missing and the nickel baseplate was broken (the "screw-wings" were missing). I don't know if in the seventys, Gibson pickups used the traditional "braided shield" or plastic cable, this one has plastic cable (maybe it was replaced).

The most "annoying" modification, was a "4 conductor wannabe". Instead of using 4-conductor cable, there was an old cable coming out from the pickup (maybe an AC or speaker cable). Finally, 2 polepieces screws were missing.

The pickup was not in working condition and it was sold "as is". My friend gave me this pickup as a gift, and when I opened it, soon realized that i only had to undo the "speaker cable mod", and maybe find some of the replacement parts (Nickel baseplate, Cable, and 2 screws).

Does anybody knows something about this era (70's) pickups?

I'll post some pics later, when i find my camera.

Of course, i won't sell it, when a friend or a customer gives me a pickup, i study them and use them on my guitars (i don't feel ok about selling gifts, too).

    Greetings,
    Ben

    It will be a T Top if it's a '74.
Personally I don't think they're all that special but they do seem to fetch a good price on ebay.

    madness...sheer madness....

Finding an appropriate baseplate may be the biggest problem. Sorting the rest will be very straight forward.
