I'm always on the lookout for things that can be used as "different" pickup covers. Yesterday, I was in a great hardware store, and found what seems to be either brass or brass-plated recessed drawer pulls. When flipped around, they make beautiful rectangular covers of suitable dimensions, with just enough edge around them to attach to the body, without being too high off the body. Very nice early 60's vibe with a corduroy-like ridged finish. Think Teisco/Silvertone/Eko/et al.
So far, it seems like they are not magnetic in any way, but admittedly the composition is unknown. As drawer pulls, they are solid with no opening for polepieces or rail. And, of course, since they are drawer pulls, there is a small "lip" on one side of the recessed area so your fingertips have something to grip. I would need to remove the ip to comfortably fit in a pickup, but apart from that, can you think of a reason NOT to use them?
Here are some examples of what I'm talking about (including rectangular and "Strat-size") in case you have trouble imagining it.
