  • Dam!!! Flimsy p-90 bobbins !!!!@#%@

i don't think I'm getting the tension that i want on my p-90 plastic bobbins without some flaring , so i was thinking if i had something like a steel bar that is longer than my p-90 bobbin ,screwed on the outside of the bobbin in thru the outside pole screw holes of the bobbin , too some threaded holes in my base plate , this should stop some flaring but will the bobbin flare after i remove it from the base plate ? i will be trying this tomorrow but i figured any advice certainly would help

personally, I think a little flaring on a P-90 bobbin is not a bad thing. Not only is it "Vintage Accurate" but it makes the process alot easier :> Others far more experienced than me may comment, but the only way i've successfully removed 90 precent of the flare was to wind the coil with pressure on both sides, then baptize the pickup in wax with pressure on the top and bottom of the coil and let it completely cool.

That is how I do it (althou I don't use a steel bar but a hard wood block), but as soon as you remove the bar the coil will flare a bit. The flare is not as bad as without the block but its still there. Maybe try what Belwar suggests, pot them with the pressure still applied

But if he´s potting the bobbin after winding he could also wind with lower tension - I don´t think he wants the wire stretch, but avoiding squeal?!

What bobbins do you use - the last batch of Allparts P90 I got were real shit. They were already warped before winding. I´ve gone back to make my own out of VF.

thanks for the advise . i just might build a jig that i attach to my baseplate ,which i remove and still attached to the bobbin , throw it in the wax

i know they have kits but not individual P-90 parts yet . i use mojo bobbins. I'm just gonna fasten a block of wood , that's larger than my bobbin to my faceplate with the bobbin in between ,with 2 screws

Try narrowing the travel of your winding pattern. If you are using limiters dial them in a bit. Personally I think the warping with P-90's is a non issue unless the warping is really severe.
They don't make them like they used to... We do.

I've just asked them about this: they will carry P90 seperated parts, but these will be available in a couple of months .

As for the flare, I use the same method as does Peter, with the same result (a bit of flare when removing the wood block).
