Originally posted by David Schwab View PostIronically, some naphtha contains paraffin! Naphtha is one of the ingredients in lighter fluid and camp fuel, so it certainly does burn. But it is a common degreaser used in guitar repair work. Light naphtha shouldn't harm hard plastics or finishes.
I didn't read the post at the Duncan forums, but I'll assume the guy isn't heating it on the stove or something! It's certainly no more dangerous than using any flammable solvent or spraying nitro lacquer for that matter.
When I was younger I used to spray guitars with nitro using a small air brush setup in my basement with little ventilation and right by the pilot light of the gas clothes dryer! Luckily I didn't blow myself up, but I did develop bronchitis which lasted for a decade or so. :\
I spray nitro with a cigarette in my mouth. I just won't flick my bic in the room. It's the spark that will ignite it.

Conversely, my spellcheck seems to to flag plenty of words that are indeed, spelled correctly. It doesn't flag naptha here, however. I think that quick reply may not enable a spellcheck here. Also in my defense, my big can of Naphtha has a big price sticker right over the "pht" so I don't get a constant visual reminder of the correct way to spell it.

There are companies that do spell it NAPTHA. Could be for customer recognition FAIK. But most MFG's do spell it NAPHTHA. And most MFG's and consumers pronounce it nap-tha. Go figure.

Hey, I didn't realize it had an H in there until I typed it the wrong way and I got a red underline. :PIt would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein
