Got the problem sorted, doubly whammy with an itermittent active passive switch and iffy earth on one of the pups. Wiring is standard dimarzio colour code.
No, they sound fine in parallel. I used to use them with series parallel switches all the time. Some people like them better that way because they are kind of thick sounding for Jazz pickups. You can also switch P pickups into parallel.
For series, black and white together, red is hot green is ground. For parallel, red and white are hot, green and black are ground.

I had a hand made bass with a klockenglang electronic to fit in and the guy had wired his pups with the super mini dpdt switch for the parallel series switching. My eyes are not getting any better with age, but with a fresh start this morning all became clear.
