  • Another potting question

Will potting get rid of the noise the strings make when you slide your finger across them on the neck? I am trying a new wind and this seems to be very pronounced, have not fired up the ol potting pot lol so wondering if anyone else has had this issue before?

I think potting makes life a bit quieter.
Must be a high output humbucker run fairly close to the strings.
I hope this potting post stays calmer than the last one.

Actually it is a Single coil. It just has that squeaky thing going on when you slide your hand up and down the neck, like using a bar chord and sliding down to the next chord etc.., I really like the tone I'm getting and don't want to change anything if I can help it.

I haven't made just tons of single coils. Just the ones for my own guitars.
Is it possible that the rod magnets are to hot. too much gauss?

Not real sure, dont have a Gauss meter to check, they are A5 I am guessing at full Gauss, May try to Degauss a little and see what happens. Well i'll try the potting first.

Pleas let us know what you come up with.

Thanks Copperhead, Whats a good reliable way to degauss? I don't own a Machine to charge with so it will have to be some other way.

you can use a neo magnet to push some of the magnetic strenght which will degauss it a little but its hard to see what you are doing without a gauss meter , but you can play with it

No, potting wont fix that. That's just finger noise. One of the guitarist I play with sprays that finger ease crap on his strings to rid of that. That's really more about technique... don't slide you fingers on the strings. One of the "advantages" of flatwounds is they are quiet, but I like that squeak from time to time.

You know Dave, you are right. I changed strings day before yesterday and had not wound anything new and played it on the new strings. I thought finger ease too but I kill strings fast enough swapping pickups lol.
