  • Mini-hum covers

Just fixed a Gibson Deluxe mini for a guy and noticed that the cover is almost completely transparent tonally. I tested some of my GJ and Mojo mini covers and they both dull the tone pretty badly, the GJ being the worse of the two. Does anyone know where to get some Gibson-clear mini covers?

The Gibson Deluxe mini must have the good high quality Nickel silver Cover.
I built a Mojo mini kit 2 weeks ago. It is advertised to have a nickel silver cover.
I had to file each end of the cover to get it to fit down flush with the bobbins.
When I filed on it, it was hard and sure looked like brass to me.
Also when you solder the cover on you will notice that it doesn't solder easily like nickel.
If you find a source for a pure nickel silver cover let me know!

ALLPARTS has mini parts. However I am not winding Gibson repro stuff so I am not sure how close they are. I will have to dig in my bin and scratch test one.

Most brass is softer than nickel silver. Actually nickel silver is a form of white brass.

I don't know what their covers are made from though.

Another thing to consider is the thickness of the covers.

Yes, thickness matters too. Have used the Allparts mini covers, they're not any better.

hmm, I am not sure of that last bit actually.
I got some full size cover from Mojo analyzed some time ago and the Lab reported me that the bare material best matched C752 Ni-Ag
I have both some mini covers and full size here from Mojo and they look very similar to say the least (which makes sense to me, I am thinking their souce is the same...).
If I sand them, yes there is an underlayer of copper plating, but then after is looks to me like silver nikel, not brass (though this is not analysis;-))

That may rather be the reason for this.
Indeed Mojo covers (I am speaking of full size here) are thicker than some other (as is their underlayer of copper plating)
Unfortunately, I haven't got some original mini cover to compare with
