There's your problem. You don't wind to DC resistance, you wind to number of turns. Thinner wire has higher resistance per foot, so winding to the same resistance means you will have an under wound coil!

So try winding the same number of turns with each gauge of wire and see what you get.

Generally thinner wire is used when you can't fit more on the bobbin, or if you want a different tone. But you should be winding your pickups by turn count. DC resistance is fairly meaningless. More turns = more output.

I do by both. I use number of turns + tension and traverse to determine the DC of my pickups. Unfortunately in the buisness most if not all players when placing an order ask for certain DC So I have this nifty little book of mine that tells me turns per bobbin. Like for A 24K pup I use a total of just over 19000 turns of 43. I do the same with 42 etc. Like I said maybe I will revisit some of the thinner wire to see whats up with them. Oh and Dave thanks for the heads up on the bass pickups. I have someone wanting me to do a rewind on a set.

You have to explain to people that DC resistance doesn't mean anything unless you are comparing two pickups wound with the same gauge wire. After all, you can get some 50 AWG and wind a 24K pickup, and you will not get what you are expecting at all!

I don't even list DC resistance for most of my pickups for this reason. You should come up with models, and then list the DC resistance as a rough guide for people who think that's important.

That is what we ended up doing for the site. Hey Dave, Jason and the others on this board thanks for the input and the straight talk no arguing or belittling of newer members. I have been doing this a while and it is nice to see help when it is needed.
