winding specs for Burstbuckers?

Oh, I know....but at least I have some numbers to start with....Im sure winding technique will affect it greatly as well....This will be a project once I get the hang of winding.
I also found that Mojo has magnet wire waaaay cheeper than those "other" guys, and they have it in a 1/2 pound spool, so I dont have to break the bank, and I can order it in smaller amounts....I'll be ordering a spool of PE just after the holidays.=)

Several of us have bought 42 and 43 PE From Mws.
Give them a call and they will give you a current price.
One final comment on the BB-3.
I'm not into the PAF thing.
But I like a Neck milder than the BB1, and I like a bridge Hotter than the BB3.
I like a neck like the Pearly Gates and a bridge like the FrankenStrat Bridge pickup.

I like Mojo, and buy stuff from them all the time... but that's still way too expensive!

They want $35 for a half pound of PE. You can get a 5 pound roll for $217, so that's $43 a pound. I get 3 pound rolls of poly or formvar for about $35.

My main concern is most of these "industrial outfits usually require you to open a business account, and then also have some sort of first order minimum, or a standard minimum order amount for every order....for the little guy, it doesnt do any good. I guess Im willing to pay a little more, if it means I dont have to buy it five pounds at a time.

One half pound wont even get you started if you are really going to do some winding.
Mws has minimum weight but no Bizz Requirements.
I'm going to order some more HFV or Some clear HPN next.

They also sell larger quantities. They are a regular wire dealer and happen to have an eBay store.

What they have changes, but if you don't see something you want, drop them an email.

And since you are just getting into winding humbuckers, save yourself some money and use SPN. When you get good results and don't waste a lot of wire, then try some PE.

I can safely say, im not going into production making pickups, I view this as mostly for doing re-winding, and it just so happens I have a few coils laying around. I take it the prices listed are per pound....At a 5 pound minimum, it adds up. If I do get serious about making pickups/rewinding alot I will certainly buy in bulk, but for now, I think the half pound spool will do better. I realize its alot more money, but I can get it in small quantities, and one at a time if need be. plus, if a half pound roll does 5-6 single coils, considering the average price of a rewind from any better known rewinder, its money well spent.
I was mainly looking at a 1/2 pound roll as a way to get my feet wet....If I decide to stick with it, or find myself doing alot of winding....I will be ordering in bulk! I do greatly appreciate all the good information I've gotten!

David, Thanks for the link! Id heard about these guys, just couldnt find the link....This may be the ticket. For the size of my shop, smaller qty is best (its already packed to the gills with guitar repair equipment)...the prices look pretty decent too.

David, Is SPN easier to wind, or just less expensive? Part of the problem is, most of the coils I have to rewind, are vintage! Should I be concerned with "vintage correct"? Id assume so, but....your thoughts? I do have several inexpensive coils to practice on.

SPN is less expensive. My point was if you haven't wound any humbuckers yet, you will need to practice. You don't want to practice using expensive wire.

If the original was wound with PE, use PE.

David....Thanks! I'll report back when I actually get started winding. With Xmas creeping up...funds are low....(had to get the tot, and the wife presents. =) Maybe I'll add a spool of PE wire to my xmas list....hehe.

Yeah, I have a wife, a five ear old and a 19 year old...

I have a box I throw magnet wire in that I cut off bad coils. It doesn't happen that often these days, but it did when I started. I just weighed it yesterday and it's a pound and a half of scrap wire. If I spent $35 for a half pound, that would be $105 worth of wire!

So unless you know that your first humbucker wont be ending up in the trash, use SPN. Lots of great pickups are wound with the stuff.

I also did a random search on Ebay....There are several 1 pound rolls of 42 awg wire around $13 a roll, with plenty of coating options....

A while back (maybe a year or two ago) a bunch of us posted our Burstbucker readings/findings all in the same thread, they were a bit different from one to the next but close enough (for Gibson).

I don't have a link to put here for ya, but I'm sure you can find the thread if you run a few searches.
