  • A new member saying hello...

I can't believe I just now found this forum and am scratching my head as to why I hadn't seen www.music-electronics-forum.com until now!

    A little background on me:

I've been winding, repairing, and refurbishing pickups of all shapes and sizes for 10 years or so. I do it because I love hearing instruments that sound great, to satisfy my geek tendencies, because it's incredibly enjoyable for me, and because it something that I happen to be good at!

Between growing up in my fathers instrument repair shop, playing music professionally on a national and international level for 20 years, and 10 years of working in guitar shops, I've had my hands on lots of great sounding instruments- both vintage and modern- and plenty of lackluster ones as well! I've spent thousands of dollars and thousands of hours researching, developing, and honing this craft as best I can- learning by trial and error (lots of errors!), but it wasn't long before I figured out the basics of what it takes to build and wind a good sounding pickup. That said, by no means to I claim to be an expert- I love to learn and am fortunate to be able to do so with every new day and every new pickup or repair.

So, hello everyone! I'm glad to be here.

          Welcome Josh,
As an actual winder of pickups, you might be the exception here. Do share what you know so we might learn something.

Actually, I'm more than happy to share any information, shortcuts, or helpful hints that I have...because the pickups I wind are going to be different than yours! Ah, the subtleties of tone.

Tastes are completely subjective and what sounds good to me might sound like a bag of nuts to you. And since we're all traveling down the same road and none of us are reinventing the wheel as it were (and if you are, hats off to you!)...at the end of the day, we're all going to get different result, even if we use the EXACT same materials. It all comes down to how you lay the wire down and the magnets used. It sounds so simple but as a process, it encompasses quite a bit- it's highly personal and there's a million "right ways" to do it. Sometimes, even the wrong ways sound like a million bucks. Go figure.

Like I said in my initial post, I do it because I get off on hearing great sounding guitars and basses, because I love it.... and because it's a way to help my fellow musicians realize their dreams. And in that, I get to realize mine.

I don't claim to know everything, but I know a few things. I'll chime in and help out when I can. Cheers, everyone!
