I'm by no means an expert on PAFs, but shouldn't the bobbin mounting screws be of the same color on those two? And, if they've never been opened, how does he know they are zebra and double white? Maybe there are legitimate answers to that, but I can't figure it out.
And, what is with him saying the original owner put them away for 40 years because "he knew they were something special"...? Someone prior to 1971 knew they'd fetch phenomenal vintage value? How many people do you know kept their Mickey Mantle rookie card instead of putting it in the spokes of their bike because they knew Antiques Roadshow would be a hit in about 50 years? Sounds like a story to me.

Even if they really are original PAFs, at that price only somebody with much more money than brains could buy'em.
Anyway, when Duncan announced the Zephyr p'ups at a $ 1,200.00, a product made with REAL precious materials and REAL ground-breaking technology, the outrage produced just make me smile. Using the same measure as poor Seymour was judged, this guy should be crucified head down and burned alive at the stake!

That said, I am pretty sure I have seen this set offered before. Same deal same story, same max for sale. Probably didn't sell because even if they are the greatest vintage PAF's ever it is still more than 3x the going rate. And the going rate is way too steep to start with.www.sonnywalton.com

What about the acclaimed DCR?
He says 8.08, and 8.82k DCR on the Other.
I am definitely no authority on PAFs, but I thought they were a lot less DCR than that.
Sounds more like a BurstBucker 2 & 3.
What do you guys that really know PAFs think about the DCR?

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
No pickups are worth $12,999.It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

I saw the DCR and was a tad suspicious myself. If the covers HAVE come off, then I'd say that they did a good job re-attaching them. It is clearly done by a professional, if it has been done at all. When I've done cover replacements they always look clean and original, but the solder joint is typically slightly larger the original so as to cover the footprint of the first joint. Given how many hacks are out there, I'd say they've never come off. Most new pickups don't have joints that look that clean.
I thought removing the mounting screws might tell you the color of the bobbin, but it seems like it would hit or miss. Does it work consistently?
The price is shocking, but it isn't the most absurd part to me. Let's face it, a day will come (maybe not in our lifetimes) when PAFs WILL be worth that much. Call it crazy, but that is how these markets work. It is that he isn't offering much in the way of proof of authenticity.

Plus no one even knows what this set of pickups sounds like. They may sound mediocre at best. No arguments from me about sell price versus actual worth - just stating an opinion that 1950s-1960s lutherie mystique will only increase with time, and the number of units on the market will only decrease.
Gretsch is a great example. I remember looking on eBay for an old Gretsch because the vintage ones, unless you were really going for the fanciest ones, were cheaper than the new ones. Get a few endorsements in there, and now they are obscene.
Once an instrument reaches a certain monteary value, it loses its value as an instrument. People are too paranoid to ever play them, and they become museum pieces. The exception is something like the vintage bowed instrument world. Most professionals can only afford their own instruments through grants, or they are on loan. That isn't a very appealing instance to me, either.
