here's a neat old one. Does that look like a mechanical autotraverse?

COILMASTER COIL WINDER FOR MAGNETIC ELECTRIC COILS ETC - eBay (item 200573808390 end time Feb-13-11 19:02:39 PST)

That is an auto traverse but it's pre-set at nearly 1:1 ratio for tiny RF coils and the like. You'd end up with a very loose and messily lopsided pickup coil that would take many hours to wind.

I still have one of those here somewhere, they're definitely not for winding pickups. I did the math when a friend passed it on and laughed. But the mechanism doesn't look like it could handle a motor at fast speeds either.

This winder is for making free-standing (no bobbin flanges) RF coils, and is totally unsuited for winding anything else. The traverse ratio and winding shape can be changed (I recall there was a set of gears and cams that appear to be missing), to allow winding of different shapes and kinds of RF coil.

Someone did a lot of thinking back then to come up with that!
