Pickup charging and calibration

Hi everyone, I'm just getting started in winding. I understand the majority and have been reading like mad.....mad.....mad I say lol.
Can some one explain if charging pickups with a rare earth magent is fine - or am i better off to use an electromagent for charging my pickups. I plan on starting out winding single coils first.
Also can some explain the best and easist way to calibrate the pickups.

Just purchased a "Sidewinder" to get me started.

Stewmac has some good pictures and how-tos in there single coil kit instructions.
Using Neo Rare earth magnets is fine.

Thank you much. I've read so much in the last few weeks from 2009 post's on up on here. Some folks just seem to get eaten up by the science of it. I've decided that what it really boils down to is experimentataion and most of all my ears. After all.....hand winding is what makes it fun.
