Their winder and their Flatwork.

It's not their winder. Stew-Mac only sells it, they don't make it.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein
I know that, You Know that.
IMO If you sell you should support it.

I don't know about that. If you buy a power tool from a store, who do you contact about support? Not the store. You go to the manufacturer.

We could argue all day about that, but I won't.
If it's a POS I would go back to the place I bought it first.
I don't know why your taking up for them. It sounded like Yours was POS.
I would think you would be headed in the opposite direction.
I Aint Going to buy one, I think Most folks have got the message!
If you look at the Stew Reviews for that Item they are horrible.
Anyway me and Forrest, That's all I got to say about that!
Have Fun,

We did Hijack the thread & turn it into a StewMac Witch hunt..... mee bad
But such a simple devise as a winder should last a long..... long...... time without out any trouble like an old stubby Black & Decker drill lol
This day & age everybody is reading reviews before buying ,Especially something so specific as a winder
Any negative feedback on forums ,cant be good for Schatten & there way overpriced winder .....unless they are looking to improve it

Your logic is failing. Me saying that you go to the manufacturer has nothing to do with taking up for a company.
I buy stuff all the time. They come with warrantee cards (the Schatten did not). They often say "don't take the product back to the store". So are you just trying to aggravate your self?
In the case of Stew-Mac, I agree that if I were to have bought the winder and had issues with it within the first year or so, I would have contacted Stew-Mac. But when I did have issues with it three years later, I looked at the Stew-Mac site first to see about any type of warrantee on the winder, which there doesn't seem to be, so then I contacted Schatten support. They got back to me right away, and actually wanted to help. However, Les wanted me to send the winder to them to repair, but I had some pickups to make.
Now regarding Stew-Mac; I've been doing business with them since the early 80s, and have had nothing but good experiences with them.

It sounded like you were on commision!!! J/K

OK now you're just being a troll. Go back and read post #9. Maybe I'm on commission from DeWalt as well?

Yea David, they only took my money and made a profit off of selling it to me with it then breaking down on me. Jeez dude. Both times mine broke within 6 months. Stew mac advertises it as a great way to make money in the shop - they plug it, they profit on it, they should support it. It doesnt say anywhere on their site that I would have to spend 400 every 6 months on a new one to make the so called money.

I guess the new machines aren't made so well. Mine went steady for three years and then the motor speed control went. But, why would you buy a new machine when you can have it fixed? If it broke in six months, I'm sure Schatten would have fixed it for free. He was going to fix mine, but I didn't have time to send it to Canada.
Two things to keep in mind though; Stew-Mac sells other Schatten products, so I'd guess when Schatten came out with the winder they sold the idea to Stew-mac. There were no other commercial winders on the market, so it probably seemed like a good idea. That whole "make money for your shop" thing is straight from Les Schatten. He gave me that whole speech. He also said the machine was not meant for production work, and was made so you can stick it up on the shelf in between rewinds.
The other thing is that Stew-Mac certainly can't fix the thing, but assuming there is some kind of implied warrantee, which I was never able to find, they should replace it if it goes bad that soon.
But I'm not defending the machine. I've said on several occasions that it's way over priced, and not made all that well. I had to do some work to it when I first got it to make things straight, and my impression was it was home made in someone's garage! I'll be selling mine as soon as I finish my new winder. But I have been able to wind several hundred sets of pickups on it. But if I were to do it again, I would have built my own in the first place.

David - unfortunately thats the problem. He offered me free motors, which dont cost hardly anything - and he never sent them. He said if it was the speed controller, it was 60 dollars. So at the rate I was having winder breakdowns, it would be 60 bucks each time - it wouldnt break me, but it would be annoying after already paying the 400 for the winder. So the real fix wasnt free...
I admit I did not know that was Schattens shpeel in the advertising. Unfortunately theres nothing about it not being able to handle production work. The price tag sort of gives the impression that it is a well made, production ready piece of equipment.
I really dont mind winding on the machine for its design, now that I use a two-way transformer and motor - I dont have to worry about the speed controller. So Im ok with using it in its capacity now. Just not how they are made stock...
