  • Copper baseplate for P90 experiment

I came across some copper sheeting about 1/16" thick to use as shielding. When I pulled the P90s (ceramic mags) out of my Goltop knockoff I removed the plated baseplate and cut a new one out of the copper sheet. I attached the new baseplate, grounded it, re-potted the new copper baseplate and shielded the cavity with another piece of the copper. I also put some thin foam padding between the shielding and the new baseplate.
Sounds much better to my ears and it has a more balanced chiminess when I nail a full barre chord. It definitely sounds like more of the high frequencies are coming through and it's not harsh or icepicky. It's got a bit of a tele bridge sound with the ballsiness of a p-90. It doesn't squeal at high volumes and it has a bit less hum. I think I'll keep it as is.
Does anyone make baseplates with copper?? Comments on it.

Very interesting! I recall that copperheadroads did some experimentation a while ago:

I briefly experimented with a copper baseplate , & i found compared to a cheap import brass baseplate ,it was an improvement
but i wish i tried it with some lower wind (neck) pickups like LTkojak suggest in the previous post
i guess its not too late...

What type of pickups did you try them with? I'm going to put one on a tele bridge next to see what happens. A tele neck might be interesting to try as they are pretty low output.
