  • 1940s 41 awg Single Formvar

I have 3 small rolls of about 1lb each of 41 awg single formvar, the seller stated it was made in the 40s was label on top 0.0028 size. Phelps Dodge Inca labelled rolls.

What would be good uses for this. ? neck pickups SC or humbuckers.

The wire looks and feels as thin as 42 awg I have to wind something to check out the resistance and will post once I do but I think its going to have some use.

If you were to get nom-max 42 awg HF you'd get something around the same size - tolerances very often will cross over into the next gauge size, so you're right on in saying it feels like 42. As for the character of the older wire, I'd have to leave it to someone else to comment. It might be of the most value to someone doing vintage rewinds, if for no reason except to be able to say they used "vintage wire".

On second reading, I'm seeing that it is SINGLE formvar not heavy. I should've actually looked at the pictures... sorry! I'm also seeing that the size is printed on the spool rather than written, so there is nothing saying that .0028 is the actual size of the wire. Do you have a digital micrometer?

Thanks Funkyk No I don't have a micrometer, but feels thin. I know about the differences between makes, For instance I have noted MWS 42 PE seems thinner than Mojo 42 PE on feel. They both sound good though. I'm hoping that this wire wont have too great a bare diameter so that I can at least wind lower resistance neck pickups. I wonder whether 40s single Formvar would have as thick a coating as modern heavy, I'd imagine that modern coatings would be thinner due to advances in technology but thats just a guess.

Anyhow I'm looking forward to winding some strat coils with this stuff, though PAFs would be interesting too.

Modern AWG 41 is around .0028" bare wire diameter ,if that is the overall diameter it closer to most 42 gauge -HAVE FUN WITH IT
