  • Bobbins arrive from Sanhe

    Folks -

Well... my bobbin order came in from China exactly when they said it would; took 2 days by TNT from Beijing (through L.A. to Chicago.)

They're really quite nice. Not sure why they made the cores rectangular (with the attendant sharp edges to cut the inner winds) but a few minutes with some hand tools will take care of that little detail...

If you ordered batches of different types of bobbins, are the cores on all of them rectangular?

    Thanks....

A few minutes on each bobbin, so for the hell of it lets say 3mins. 100 bobbins thats 5 hours. I hope they were cheap.

Seeing as how Duncan, DiMarzio, et al., do not use bobbins with rectangular cores, I can't see how this can be a good thing, even with taking the time to smooth out the sharp edges. It would be interesting to see how much of the core needs to be rounded off before the bobbin is usable -- assuming you do not cut / sand / whatever into the pole piece / screw cavity.

I wonder how many of Sanhe's other offerings also have rectangular cores?

                They were.

Also, they're fiendishly adaptable to a number of different pickup designs I'm working on at the moment, so a bit of dorking around with them is quite acceptable.

You're right that if I needed to go into turnkey crank-'em-out mode with this run this doofey oversight of theirs would bother me more.

                  I will.

It's likely that I'm gonna run some over to a transformer shop down the road and see how they feel about working with these should I decide to ramp into some level of production.

I put Sanhe firmly in the "These fockers can GTF" camp, when after about of week of to'ing & fro'ing emails, at the final hurdle the guy I was dealing with me subsequently asked me to TT my dosh to his own bank account (note: *not* Sanhe's bank account....*his* bank account)....also the shipping cost of $1,000 (for delivery by space shuttle?) seemed more than a tad excessive.

As an aside, these Asian suppliers could save a lot of heartache by having the prices listed on their website, rather than having to go through the "how much are they?" [receives reply], "ok, then how much are those other ones" etc etc.

                      Indeed!

Took me a few exchanges to get things straight (and I think I just transferred funds through PayPal without paying attention to the recipient) but these items do appear to have great potential in smoothing out my scene at the moment; shipping by TNT was something like $26.

Yeah, well my grand total was a few thousand dollars (not just for bobbins though) , so I paid very close details to where/whom the money was going to, lol!

Care to say what you ordered? (ie quantity & total cost of the order you placed )...because $26 shipping is much more to my liking! (& way lower than anything I've ever seen or been quoted by an Asian supplier before)

Well... Pinpe made me the proverbial Un-refusable Offer (which she (I think) said was an Introductory Gesture) of 100 bobbins for 21 cents per unit. Shipping was actually $25.

                            Do we get pictures?
I bought some blade bobbins that were square on the ends of the winding area.
I ended taking a small rat tail file and rounding them off a bit.
                            Sounds like a good deal.

I don't see where the square ends would really be an issue after the first few layers were down. Sharp corners wouldn't be good but we are talking about very fine wire generally. It might actually help anchor the first few turns and eliminate fatigue at the start end (not that that is ever a problem).
