Is this the right wire?

Seems to be the right stuff, but I want to make sure.

I'm looking at the Soderon FS/155...this is Solderable 42 SPN, right? I guess the "FS" and the "Polyurethane/Polyamideis" thing is throwing me off. I believe I want Polyurethane...but I don't know what "Polyamideis" is. So I just want to confirm that this is common/acceptable wire for 'buckers.

Also...what type of spool is easiest to work with? Tapered, tapered flange, straight, other?

Probably inconsistent wire size throughout the roll. Most rolls have some of that no matter but some are worse than others, a lot worse. Also the coating on some wire i have seen is crap, some places are fine, deeper in the roll it gets thin to the point you can see a difference??

And where can I get good 42 SPN? I've heard StewMac is not good also. MWS maybe? Anyone? Help the newb find some good wire?

I don't know that I've ever used Essex, so I can't comment. I buy most of my wire from MWS. They tend to provide spools with flat ends, but it really doesn't matter which way you go. You'll have to buy 5 to 8 lbs minimum. Ask for:

42 SPN-155 Red (NEMA MW80-C)

This is Single Poly Nylon type wire, which is solderable so you don't have to strip the insulation as with Plain Enamel. All of these folks base their prices on current copper prices plus fees, so they should be close in terms of cost.

Just call and tell them you need some magnet wire for building pickups and they'll hook you up. Everybody here has a gripe about somebody, but MWS provides a pretty consistent product, IMO. As always, YMMV.

I've heard StewMac is not good also.

StewMac gets their wire from Schatten, who is just repackaging wire from somewhere else.

I've used the StewMac wire, and except for one roll being rolled up on the spool weird, I haven't found anything wrong with it. It's expensive for the amount you get though.

I got a spool of wire from stewmac 1 time. It was rolled very sloppy and kept getting tangled and breaking. Stewmac replaced the wire for me but the second 1 had the same problem. I had to throw out both rolls.

The second roll I got from them was a bit tangled at the beginning, but after I pulled some wire off it was OK. I've had three more rolls after that with no problem.

I think Schatten just buys big rolls and winds up those little spools. I get the feeling that he's a one man shop.

Sloppy rolls was the problem I had heard elsewhere too. Being I'm a newb that's a challenge I could do without. I think I'll go with MWS.

I used the Stewmac wire in the early days. It's not bad, but as Dave says, it's super-expensive, the equivalent of about $600 for a 5-lb. spool.

And because the amount is so small, I would often end up near the end of the spool with about 3k worth of wire left on it -- not enough to make a pickup with, so I had to chuck it. What a waste! Could have been used for tapped singles I suppose, but I wasn't making those at the time.

EDIT: I didn't run into any tangle problems.

Haven't used MWS so cannot comment on their product but..they wanted $150US to ship 5lb wire to Australia ( fark that ), not sure which country you are in but take into account your shipping fees , whitmore wirenetics charges me around $35... but you have to make sure you tell them you want your 5lbs all on the same spool or you might end up with part spools ( like I did )which is really not on, trouble is sometimes being so far away you can be a bit at the mercy of suppliers...

MWS charges me about $11 or $12 to ship 8 pounds within the US from CA to FL. I assumed you live in the US. Pretty hard to fathom a $150 charge to ship 8 pounds based on USPS Global Priority Mail rates which are far lower than that so I don't know what was going on there unless they simply don't want to ship overseas. Again, everyone has a gripe about someone and YMMV.
