The NEMA MW-1000 standard describes the necessary minimums
for insulated magnet wire that is intended for sale in the United States.
If you were ever curious about the standard it but didn't want to
cut loose of $160+, NEMA is finally allowing free
copies of the standard for single user download at:
http://www.nema.org/stds/mw1000.cfm
It is around 230 pages and 1200 kilobytes in size.
What it does do is give wire sizes, insulation abrasion resistances,
and exact specs about insulation types such as formvar (MW-15C)
versus solderable poly (MW-26C).
What it doesn't do is provide info on insulation dielectric constants,
dielectric strength, and dissipation factor -- stuff you need to guesstimate
distributed capacitance.
...but it's the industry standard and it is now available free=cost of download,
not free as in free beer.
