  • 1949 Dynasonic specs

I'm hopping to get my hands on a 1949 Gretsch that is in desperate need of restoration. It was originally a custom order Archtops with no electronics but because the original pickguard is gone I figure it won’t hurt anything to mount a pickup on the replacement pickguard. If I’m going to mount a pickup on the guitar I reckon I better do something that is in keeping with what Gretsch used back then, so can any of you tell me where I might be able to find specs for the dynasonic pickups they used back then? I don't even know where to start.

I have no idea where you might find info on these pickups. I have seen some older Dynasonics though and if the ones I've seen are similar to the year that you want to clone, then you're in for a lot of work and expense. These things have springs and a bunch of other weird stuff on them. Maybe Possum can comment more since he has some old ones.....

Yeah, the ones you have seen are similar to what I want to make. Each magnet sticks way out the back of the bobbin has a spring around it and then mounts to a little brass ring than is attached to a poll for adjusting the magnet height.

I have a 60's NOS set and another one in the neck of my DeArmond copy, the set is different from the other one, I don't think there is a standard but I can measure the 60's set if you want...

Yeah, those are the ones I was thinking of. Those are REALLY cool sounding pickups too, so good choice on something to clone! I saw that Duncan lists one on his custom shop list, but I wonder how accurate they are to the old ones.

It would be really cool if you could to that for me. I'm particularly after the dimensions of the magnets and bobbin, but any other information you might have, like wire gauge and DC resistance, would be great as well. I’m perfectly content with educated guesses too.
