DeArmond-RoweIt would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

They are the gold foil type pickups, looks like those have silver foil, but the same. They have rubber magnets inside, very simple single coils, steel baseplate.http://www.SDpickups.com

I had one of those guitars years ago.
I'm curious... when were the rubber magnets invented? I thought that was a relatively recent invention.

Pretty sure it was 44 formvar, but its been a long time since I've messed with those. I was going to make a copy but I went the DeArmond/Kay route and used alnico instead, had custom magnets made. So they are more like the Stratotone pickups that Junior Watson made famous and drove the prices of those cheap guitars thru the roof....http://www.SDpickups.com

I've seen formvar and plain enamel and there's nothing set for these pickups. c/w round the taped magnet ranging from 42awg to 45awg. There are pickups as low as 3.5k to pickups as high as 14.5k. I have had the magnets made 58mmx10mmx5mm in all alnico grades/ceramic and rubber and also with holes for pole screws and allthough the rubber ones are fairly powerful I still dismiss them as not sounding like Dearmonds. Word was that Harry designed this pickup around an Indox magnet he got from Indianna Mining co. but how true I don't know. It is such a simple pickup once you've located all the materials and yes nice to make the covers etc but there are other ways of boxing them in and they will still sound good for something that is very basic.

Does anyone happen to know what the "gold foil" material (or rather "silver foil" in this case) on these old De Armond pickups is made of? That question has always had me stumped.
Same for the Teisco "gold foils" -I could never work out what that mesh material they used was made from either.

Hi
The gold foil is a kind thick embossed paper, you have to be careful when reassembling the pup. All of the ones i´ve rewound have had a hard rubberized magnet material.
Cheers
