  • Sooo... Anybody wanna sell any pickups?

Hey all. I am looking for something "different". I am looking for prominent mids, especially low mids. And a fairly high output. I don't want muddy. I need tight bass response too. Kind of dark sounding would be cool as well. Definitely humbucking. I am putting it (bridge position) in a Schecter Hellraiser Tempest. Mahogany body with a maple cap. the resonance and tone is very "paul-ish". Anybody have anything like this? Please give me a shout. Oh and a pricing would be cool too. Thanks for looking.

You should have no problems getting someone to build you something.
Price will vary a great deal.

You don't want muddy, but dark sounding is OK... what's the difference? Dark=muddy.

Sounds like you want a Duncan JB or Suhr Doug Aldrich.

I get requests like these sometimes. You are asking for contradicting things, tight bass but high winds are opposite things. High winds chokes the treble and bass and is mid heavy. Now, alot of guitar players don't understand what "hot" actually is. For instance, here's EVH doing "Eruption." Hot pickup? Nope, thats a '62 early Patent, all of them were never hotter than 7.6K range. Low wound pickups have a broader frequency range so they sound "louder." Really hot pickups can sound low output and dull.

I think I can speak your language

So: Tight Bass, low resonant peak, high output... These things go together.

          Are you down tuned?

What amp do you play through?

          What guage strings?

Name 3 dudes (dudettes) who have killer tone:

I charge $130 per pickup stock or custom. You can expect it to be more awesome than store bought pickups.

I can send you sound samples of the stuff I have wound in the past if you PM me your email.

I'm a small time winder. I have my pickups stocked at a small music shop in Ogden, Utah. I regularly wind "killers". A Killer is a pickup that is like another pickup, but has the customer's requested refinement. For an example, I sell a reasonable amount of t0ne Zone killers. The attack and the legato lead tone of the TZ, with tight bass response.

          Peace!

The early FrankenStrat had a rewound pickup around 9k.
            So All the Speculation goes.
            Mostly the Amp.
Early Hot Rodded Marshall I think.
The Overall Tone Not that great IMO!

Yeah, I thought the same thing. Pretty crappy tone really.

O.K., I won't shoot you Terry. Pretty sure that has more to do with the quality of the camera phone used to film this at that time. iphone hadn't been invented yet, and all

It sounded to me like right before the Show?
Eddie had the Amp upside down installing a couple extra Cathode bypass Caps!

I have a feeling the poster uploaded a video that was digitized from a very old and worn out VHS cassette. Besides, we all know what youtube does to audio! I'll bet if we were all sitting about a dozen rows back at that show, we would have been blown away, not just by Eddie's skill, but by the tone as well.

Nope, the EVH Frankenstrat had a '62 early Patent/PAF from the 335 he ruined. Later on it had a rewound DiMarzio that was overwound and a bunch of other stuff he tried. Go find a close up of the original first version of that guitar and search out every interview he gave before he started spewing out nonsense to throw players off ;-) Now you got that close up photo in front of you, go look closely at the video. What you'll see in the photo is a warped early Patent bucker, warped from his too hot potting attempts, the one thats in there survived but the top got melted and isn't flat but warped, notice the rusty poles. If you've worked with early Patents and PAF's you'll know what you're looking at. Now go watch that video and wait til you see the lights highlight the top of the pickup, there's those same warped bobbins from hot potting and rusty poles. The tone is the giveaway, super bright edgy metallic tones typical of PAF's and early Patents. The later stuff he used lost that incredible sound PAF's and early Patents have. I own the same year pickup thats in that guitar, I know that sound so well. He also had no tone control or tone cap so that made the pickup the brightest it can be. Here's another great PAF equipped guitar, Peter Green's Les Paul bridge pickup, this video hasn't been overly tweaked by studio engineers like most of the recordings of this guitar have been so you get the full effect of the bright edgy greatness of these pickups full force:
