What I'm not understanding is if they are so hard to pry loose from the vice, how did they end up shattering?

I tried to carefully position the first set of magnets on one jaw of my Parrot vise. The result was blood blisters on both of my hands from having the skin on my fingers pinched between the magnets and the vise jaw face. Not wanting to repeat that experience, I positioned the second set of magnets as close as I dared to go the opposite jaw and let go. A stacked pair of 3" x 1/2' x 1/2" magnets has an amazing amount of pull force. The magnets slammed in the vise jaw with enough force to produce sparks. The magnet that you are using exerts 17lbs of pull force per magnet. A 3" x 1/2" x 1/2" neodymium magnet exerts 61.5lbs of pull force per magnet.

By the way, I purchased my magnets from CMS Magnetics via Amazon.

Yeah, they are tricky to work with sometimes. I use much smaller ones and inn the beginning had some pinches and shattered magnets. I still break one every so often when I'm not being careful.

Can that same jig be used to magnetize ceramic C8 magnets? I ask because most of the C8 magnets I can find (like those from Mojotone) are magnetized through the .5" height, but I'd like to be able to magnetize them through the .196" width.

Maybe. I have increase the charge of weak ceramic magnets this way, but I'm not sire if you can reorient them. Ceramics are much harder to charge.

I accidently reversed the charge on one of the small rail ceramics.
I was just degaussing some I thought, and it flipped over.

Hmm... maybe I'll just have to find some C8s that are already magnetized through the smallest dimension. I was worried that it might not be possible given that some magnet materials' geometry affects their ability to retain a charge (like alnicos, IIRC).

It doesn't take much to maintain the safety of the magnets themselves, but you have to wonder about maintaining the safety of other things from those magnets.

Whenever I've ordered magnets, they are in oversized boxes with lots and lots of bubble wrap and crumpled paper keeping the magnets at the center of the box.

Yep... same here.

When I ordered a bunch of ceramic magnets from Sens Mag they were in cardboard boxes, which were in styrofoam boxes, and then they had steel sheets bent around the boxes! Seemed like overkill.

I wouldn't a neo to DEmagnetize magnets, only to magnetize them. If you really want to totally demagnetize magnets you need one of these:
eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices
They are useful for degaussing magnets if you hook them up to a Variac. Also very useful for demagnetizing shop tools like screw drivers or strat bobbins so you can blow them off with compressed air to make sure no iron dust or whatever is stuck in there. My shop is full of lathe and mill steel dust etc. so its real useful. Mostly now though I just use a ceramic bucker magnet to degauss with by repelling against alnico, but you need a gaussmeter for this because if you just repel and leave it alone it will regain alot of charge over next few minutes. So to avoid that, after repelling then I use the ceramic to attract to pull the charge back to what it will regain. You do this repeatedly until you get a stable charge to your specs using a good gaussmeter.

I wouldn't even want to be the same room with that thing! Have you ever seen the photos of the finger smashed between a couple of big neos like that?

Why would you want to demagnetize your screw drivers? I routinely magnetize all of mine! It makes using them a lot easier.
