  • Newby question I know but what the hay..

I have a very newby question and feel silly but i'll ask anyway. Just getting back into winding after a very long hiatus. Question is:

I am finding that when I wind loose for say strat singles, the tone is big, lots of output, distortion or drive sounds good, clean they sound good by themselves but..... When in the between positions they get semi muddy, very little definition. In contrast when I wind with a good amount of tension, they sound really good distorted or clean, very harmonically rich. The thing I'm having problems with is the output. While they all sound great and very chimey in the tween positions and alone, the output seems much weaker than the ones wound very loose. Am I crazy?? Am I missing something in the winding? I wound the bridge with a little more scatter than the other 2. around 80 to 90 TPL bridge and mid and neck about 100 tpl.

I think I may have figured this one out lol. Duh, it just occurred to me that with tighter tension I am actually getting less turns of wire for the same DCR and a smaller coil. Gotta get my counter fixed lol.

        Not much help here.
My question, are you doing RWRP, or are all 3 coils wound the same with the same polarity?
I always use the RWRP configuration.
When you are in Hum canceling mode you would have the characteristics of a hum bucker.
With a hum bucker you cancel 60 cycle hum, and some Highs.
Also I notice that the Capacitor seems to have more effect in pos. 2 & 4.
I usually roll the cap back more in 2 & 4.
Maybe that will help get the coversation going?
Glad to see you back on the forum.

The looser wound pickup will use a little more wire but the bass increases as well

And this is why you don't wind to DCR! Get a counter.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

I agree, I go by mainly by turns. I recently changed my old manual counter out for an optical sensor with a CUB4L display
I got the optical sensor from a junk ink jet printer, wall wart from an old cell phone charger and used the clear plastic disc (shaved down) that comes on top of a spool of CDR discs for the trigger wheel. Blacked out 1/2 the disc, added one 470 ohm resistor and it's dead on.....
