Bucker bobbin mount screws?

Your "old" Microfastener screw looks way better than the new ones, the head is deeper on the old and the threads are actually there ;-) Well, that answered my question about their current quality. You can't find a screw driver that matches a poorly punched phillips slot, there isn't one. I think 2-26 means its a really fat screw size so won't work. The other link I may try those out. Another issue is actual metal composition, I got some 3/8" inch long ones from McMaster, the slots are good but trying to age them its obvious its a strange brass alloy that won't age correctly, they sort of turn gun metal grey instead of brown; they told me today they can't get 1/2" long anyway. I did run across Mutual Screw but didn't find the right size so thanks for that link. Yes you can find phillips screws everywhere in America but you can't find any MADE in America unless you have them made. Montreaux's may be Japanese made, they age right, screw drivers fit perfect, good threads, expensive though.....

I use stainless screws for my P-90s, they are Philips head but piss poor so I cut a slot across the top of em with the hack saw and they don't miss a beat. Just sayin, obviously you wouldn't want to go that route with your paf replicas Dave.

The threads are much coarser on a self tapping wood screw, than on a #2 machine screw.
The solution is a better screw, of maybe a different brand.
Like Possum said early the Micro brand screw has that very shallow head.
Copper said it has changed, not sure if they fixed it or not.

But still, there seems to be some solution there somewhere. If the threads are coarser on the wood screw, then a machine screw tap would still get the job started. Plastic doesn't exhaust well as you try to self tap and can be tricky even with a good screw. If a tap doesn't seem appropriate, perhaps getting a more robust screw just to use as a dummy screw... something with a nice big head that you screw in and screw back out, and then hopefully the brass one just slides on in.

You might call General Threaded Products in town. They have a lot of very old stock buried away in the back. Same with Winks Hardware.

I'll try Wink's, but General doesn't have a website, I'm asleep during their business hours unfortunately. Chinese screws have pretty much replaced everything, doubt there's any US stuff left...

Winks is all Chinese as I expected. I emailed a company that made screws for me 8 years ago, to see if they can make these bobbin mount screws and what pricing. I'll post my findings and see if anyone wants to do a group buy, I really really hate these Chinese screws.....

If you're not dead set on philips, these are pretty good quality:

Probably non-US, but what are you going to do? I normally buy 1000 at a time. Pretty good price, I think, and they age nicely. I have to chuck one ever now and again for a shallow slot, but the threads are generally nicer than anything else I've used. I used to have a lot of trouble with screws not biting well in "non black" bobbins (seems to be softer material). Normally, these hold nicely. YMMV.

Those are standard screws.
They are fine if you like 3/8".
Most of us have gone to 1/2" screws.
The 1/2 just gives more threads, if the bobbin is getting wallered out, or if you have it shimmed up tight.
The 3/8" is the original all right. I like the way they are threaded all the way.
I much prefer the 1/2, but you need a good head on it for the extra threads, or the head gets wallered.
