If you look at Rickenbacker 4001 bass treble pickups, they are made of phenolic circuit board material, which is a greenish color, and they spray paint them black.

Bartolini makes the base plate on his pickups out of copper clad board also.

The copper also makes a good shield.

I use plain phenolic perf board, but I did make a Tele pickup from copper clad board. It's actually very cool looking as is, but I painted it black.

They don't do that on the new ones though do they? I haven't looked closely enough on recent ones to see but they did do that on the older ones. A recent 6 pole high gain I took apart had a molded plastic bobbin with no seperate top and bottom pieces, and was some soft matierial that would melt if wax potted. It looked almost like nylon.......

Not the high gain... that has a molded plastic bobbin, as does the toaster (same bobbin). I was talking about the bridge pickup on the 4001/4003 bass. I'm not sure what the news ones look like, but the last few I've seen where the same.
