  • loose copper winding on scatterwound pickup - Is this acceptable?

I just got a set of scatterwound pickups and I noticed that one of them has a single 1 inch section of copper winding that is loose enough to hang down and out of the bottom of the pickup cover. The wire isn't broken.

Will this affect tone? Would you ask for an exchange? Or is it no big deal? Its not unravelling, and I've asked to exchange them but got a message back stating that this was normal and that it shouldn't affect tone. DO scatterwound pickups have loose wire like this sometimes?

      Its these:

GFS "Premium II" Alnico II, Hand Bevelled Strat Set

They are for a fairly cheap guitar so I didn't want to spend a ton.

What problems could it cause? Would it be microphonic? Or some other issue. They told me I needed to install it and confirm it didn't work - they said it was not uncommon for a scatterwound pickup to have this situation.

If you want to keep them you can gently fold the wire back and coat it with fingernail polish.
I've done that on some repairs that the customer didn't want to rewind.
Or if you are a winder you could take the finish lead loose and unwrap until you get the slack out.
I am a hand winder with some scatter, and I never sell anything that is Loose like that.

Thanks for the feedback- they are taking the pup back for an exchange. They pushed back at first but relented after my more forceful followup email.

If it were me, for the price you paid per pickup I would do as Big tee said and just be done with it rather than screw with shipping and the headaches.

Another thing, and it is world known about GFS.
They sell tons of stuff at good prices, and some of it is great.
But, Their Customer Service As a Whole leaves a lot to be desired.
I read countless posts about them and their poor customer service on other forums.
So like Stratz just Said I would fix it and go on!
                Good Luck,

I'd give it a tight wrap of plumbers tape and call it good. If it hasn't been wax potted or dipped in lacquer it will definitely be microphonic.

Get some black paper tape and wrap them up. Even regular masking tape is fine, since they will have covers on them.

Thats a better idea David.... I didn't think of that.
Plumbers tape will hold good and it wont stick to the winding so it's totally reversible.

Yeah, no doubt. They are all machine wound in Korea..... That is definitely some SLOPPY manufacturing. Even though it could be fixed in short order, a customer should never be put in that sort of situation.

Just as a side issue - the start lead appears to be wired to White hookup and the end to Black.

Isn't the start wire Black as "standard" ??
