I didn't have that pickup to examine. That was a photo a found. I have read a few times that Fender might have used bondable wire, and that appears to be lacquer potted.

The PE pickup was one I had here for rewinding.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

I made a few sets some years ago for my jbass, one set using HF with the bridge at 8.56K but prefer less turns with that wire. 9.5K would be too dark for my liking with HF, too much stretch (I struggled to get 8.56K). I preferred PE and SPN to HF.

What is the consensus on J-bass pickups as far as how hot they were wound in the 60's? I've heard they were wound less in the 70's...and I saw that Spence had posted about 7.25k neck and 7.75k bridge for the 60's ones...does that sound about right? I wonder how many turns that would be....

The 63 J bridge I just had here was just over 8K, wound in PE, it sounded fine. I wound the neck to 1970's spec (7800 turns) at 6.3K in SPN and it sounded fine too. I have a hard time believing many would hear the difference between 1000 turns on a bass pu. The pu positions relative to the bridge totally overwhelmed any differences in wire insulation, potting, winding style or +-10% turns count.

BTW. the bass player I did this PU for is extremely happy w. this PU at 7,4. Maybe he would habe liked it at 8,5 KO too, but since the neck PU was intact this was the way to go.
