  • Newbie Humbucking soapbar pickup Question! Will it buck the hum?

Hello everyone, I wonder if you might be able to help me out,

I'm making a custom set of 2x humbuckers for a Tobias Toby pro 4 string bass.

I have 4 pickup coils in total obviously, 2 neck spaced jazz bass pickup and 2 bridge spaced jazz bass pickups. I have taken the shared bar magnets off from one of the neck pickups and one of the bridge pickups and swapped their polarity.

    So in order:

Neck pickup coil 1 - North up - Clockwise
Neck pickup coil 2 - south up - Anti clockwise

Bridge pickup coil 1 - North up - Clockwise
Bridge pickup coil 2 - South up - Anti clockwise

My question is will they work ok, be hum proof and above all work ok? I am worried that the bar magnets might interfere with the next coil

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

I think you would have been ok if you would have wound them the same, and just have north and south. but with the reverse wind you will get a lower output when paired. should still cancel the hum. just my thoughts on it.

No problem with one being CW, and one being CCW.
If both are wound the same direction you tie the finish leads together.
If one CW, and One CCW like yours, you have to tie a start and a finish together, for each pickup position.

hiya, havent wound them yet so will bear that in mind - 4x clockwise!

You reckon the mags wont interfere being so close?

        Cheers,

Wind them all the same direction, and wire them up start to start, or finish to finish. If you accidentally wire them in phase they will be out of phase because of the magnet polarity. Then they will hum and sound very thin. Are you wiring them to 4 conductor cables? You should.

That's how closer magnets are on humbuckers, so I don't see why that's an issue.

            Thanks David,

4 conductor yes, i like switching options anyway.

Will wind start to start with north up and south up in each humbucker pickup

Great thanks guys, Making an experimental set for a friend. Well experimental for me! Dub reggae here we come!

Keep in mind that "humbuckers" rarely remove any and all hum, since no two coils, save those that occupy the exact same physical space, will be equivalently sensitive to the hum source. What they WILL do is reduce the hum down to a level acceptable for performance or recording. If your pickups, and standing a reasonable distance from an EMI source, and facing in the optimal direction, reduces hum by 90-95%, you will have done a good thing. If 95-97%, you will have done an outstanding thing. If 98-99%, you will have done the near-impossible.

How are these magnets magnetized? If they are humbucker mags (magnetized across the width) then you won't get much from them as shown in you photo above. It looks like you have the poles stuck to the neutral zone on the sides of the magnets and very little flux will get to the strings.
If the magnets are magnetized through the thickness (thinnest dimension) then you are in good shape.

hi David, a very good question - but yes they should work as they are north "up" not north to the side like a regular humbuckers magnets. All the are is 2 sets of jazz bass pickups with the usual bar magnet on the back.

Thanks for all your help guys, what an addictive forum!
