  • First 'Bucker Done!

Thanks to all for advice and support. Took me all day and I had my fair share of snags but I feel like a proud papa nonetheless. For all I know she sounds like poo, but I'm too tired to install her to find out. I'll repost once she's in.

    Cheers!

Ahh, stew mac stuff. No worries. It should sound ok. I see you put a hefty offset on the screw coil.

Yep.. I'm still riding with my training wheels on. They sound ok. It's definatly a big improvement over the originals. I'm satisfied for my first effort. The next set will be for my strat.

I used StewMac baseplate, spacers and bobbins also. Is there something subpar about these parts? I got braided wire from Acme Guitarworks. Allstar magnetics mag and MWS wire.

Not really. Probably made in the same factory as a lot of other pickup parts.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

I'll see what I can do.

These are the first two that I've built, so I didn't have great expectations. It was a good learning experience for me. I'm confident with my winding setup now. I wish I would have wound the humbucker a little hotter, but hey I can always build another

The Stewmac stuff is fine for the most part. The cream bobbins are a horrible color and their bobbins are made of a stiffer plastic -- you need a stick of dynamite to get the slugs in the slug bobbin sometimes -- but in terms of performance, they're fine. But overall I prefer the GJ bobbins, easier to work with, plus their 49.2mm bobbins are a bit taller so you can get more wire on them.

Here they are if you can tolerate my playing. I hope this works. I've never posted a clip before. I'm unfamilar with this host, so if you get hit with a bunch of popups let me know, and I'll pull the link down.

Audio chain: guitar > modded TS-9 > alesis nanoverb > Voice of Music VM 160 > SM-57 > behri mixer > USB. No onboard FX. Guitar at middle position with the humbucker split. The screw coil is rwrp to the neck pickup.

                              Hi John

Thanks for the clip. It almost sounds like something is out of phase in the pickup. Or it could be my 6AM hearing, Just got up a short while ago LOL.
