  • Pickup winders in Canada?

Hi second post, really enjoying it here,,,
Im just getting into building guitars right now - my shop is almost completed and Ive got an electric underway, but I will be building acoustics as well as soon as Im completely geared up.
However Im a bit distracted with pickup winding at the moment though,
and its definitely going to be part of my building and repair options for the shop eventually
(i.e. something Im going to put some time and effort into over the next while)
I was wondering whether there were any builders in my area -
either British Columbia, preferably Vancouver Island...
but Id be interested in talking to any pickup winders in Canada
In addition to asking alot of newb questions concerning the art,
I figured it would be helpful to be able to know where the best suppliers to order from here...etc.
    So - anyone? Thanks!
    Cheers

I'm in Canada, around the GTA. But I'm pretty new at it as well. The basic winding a pickup is dead easy. But the tricks/technics area... that I think will be the learning curve.

        Hows it going(eh?)
I was wondering whether your finding you have to order most of your parts from out of the country>?
I realize theres not always dealers for what you want in Canada - its a real drag sometimes - of the nearly $10,000 worth of tools and stuff in my luthierie shop Id say nearly 50% had to be ordered from south of the border - It'd be nice if there were a realiable magnetics co up here that could fit the bill for what were looking for in pickup parts!
        Anyhow nice to meet you.
        Cheers

So far the only thing I have been able to source in Canada is the wire. And luckily it's a 5 minute drive away so I don't pay shipping. I'm trying to get a quote for a set of dies to punch Strat flatware, but it's been over a week just to get a quote. Magnets, I haven't bought in bulk yet, but again, I'll have to bring in from the US it appears. If you know of any sources, share away!

Do any of you gentlemen know what ever happened to the guys who made Evans pickups in Victoria?

I only wind stuff for myself, but there is a scrap dealer near me with a huge bin of surplus magnet wire that they sell as scrap copper for $5/lb. I picked up a great roll of #43 Electrosola wire with a funky green insulation for peanuts, as well as some other rolls. Bobbins and flatwork are another matter. I generally rely of getting dead pickups from people.

Sorry, fairly new to pickup winding so I don't know who you're referring to. Thanks for the idea of the scrap dealers.. never thought of that. Probably not common to find magnet wire at a scrap dealer though.

Sadly, it is awaiting use, at the bottom of a huge stack of other more pressing chores. I'm hoping to get to it later this summer and will surely report on it ASAP if and when the time comes.

Unfortunately Evans doesnt wind anymore, not commercially anyhow - Im not sure what people think of his work here, but anyway
I been trying to get a hold of him in order to see if he had local suppliers I could hit up... Ill let you know if and when I find out... Cheers
