Storing Coil Wire

I suppose this would be a related thread to the 66" wire thread, where I got the Idea for this one, but different topic so . I store My wire in the box it comes in, and put a humidity pack on top, then I just put it in a locker on a shelf labled on all four sides the awg,insulation, and build so I can quickly glance at it. I'm an organizeing freak. Basically all my supplies and tools( that fit) are in the same locker on different shelfs. I can't concentrat with too much clutter, and find it very distracting to have to hunt down a file, bit, drill, scraper etc.
How do you guys store your Wire/supplys?

Other than the wire, everythings in a loose pile Acutally, several small piles strategically placed where they will piss off the wife.

Mine are currently in the boxes that they were shipped in and i take them out when i need them. I would like to get a tall locker with shelves and doors to provide a little protection. My bench gets pretty cluttered and i don't want to bang something into a spool and unknowingly damage the wire.

I put mine out where the cat can get at 'em, they make really nice scratching posts....nah. I don't think you need to put a humidity packet in there unless you're storing them in a basically outdoor environment and live in Miami Beach. The insulation isn't going to degrade probably in the time we have left to live unless you're pouring beer and sweat on every coil you have. I'm slowly getting more organized, still a clutter monkey, but I pretty much know which pile things are in unless my wife comes in and "borrows" a screw driver, then I spend hours looking for something thats not there :-)

Haven't you guys heard of the 'just in time' philiosophy? I only buy in what i think will be gone in two months. I put them on a shelf otherwise.

A Well Known East Coast manufacturer stored the spools in the boxes they came in, low in the racks near the winding room. Just outside the door there were other racks that held scrap wire from winds that went bad which were pulled from the bobbins (sometimes). There were also spools that got tangled and weren't usable -- only because they couldn't spend the time to untangle them. One of their people used to strip off layers from a tangled spool when there was time, and return the "repaired" spool back to production. That is, when they weren't using him for a dart board. All other scrap was sent for recycling.

Other than that, they had the "just in time" scheduling nailed down pretty well. Caused the production manager some loss of hair over the years, as well as a bad smoking habit. Gets kind of 'intense' when your _only_ mold / tool and die shop / major part supplier implodes on you. I think the prominent facial tic he developed from that escapade has since resolved itself.

I caught my wife banging up a shelf using one of her shoes to drive the screws in like hammer and nails. She now has her own pink girly tool kit.
If she ever opens it I guess she'll find something in there to stab me with....

What is happening here? This is the second recent thread where wives have come into the conversation, and I thought that this forum was "a bit Man's"
Still Suppose I'm as much to blame though I have no problems with the present other half as long as everything is stored in the workshop and not in the house. Only time I get any trouble is if I run out of classical strings and she catches me looking sideways at the cat. and I'm sure she checks it now and then to make sure it's not been fitted with a Trans Trem and a pair of Humbuckers in which case the the storage space would be less as I'd have a bed and a cooker out there with me as well.

I do the just in time thing too damn much too, but when I got money coming in I also hoard stuff to cover my ass. I have enough bucker bars probably to weight a horse down and drown him in a lake. If you find a good buy on something, buy a big load of it. Pickup covers I am bad at but I have hoarded enough nickel silver 50mm covers to cover most of the year I hope. With the problems coming from Korea hoarding is a good mindset.....

I always get burned with the just in time method. I don't worrie about parts anymore, I just make'em(except the bobbins). But wire....thats the funny biz....I always try to keep an extra spool of the main weapons of choice, but scout for awkward sizes/insulation types which is like inviting the plauge cause your not guaranteed to get it again. But, friends from the forum may point you in the right direction, or have worked with the same which is a godsend sometimes so you don't waste as much...
