  • Magnet Orientation for ceramic

    Hi
well I'd like to present myself
I'm Gabriel an I've been reading for a long time this forum and is great to find reliable information.
I've been building pickups for a few months now with very good results and now I'm on the phase of
trying new things and I have a few questions if you don't mind.

I'm building a model that requires Ceramic Magnet magnetized like in some fender single pickups (at the bottom)
my question is: is it hard to get ceramic magnets oriented in other way than traditional?

and my second question is: Do all alnico magnets have a directional grain?

thanks for your help folks and great forum!

    Gabe

I've never seen ceramic magnets oriented like that for sale, at least not from places that sell for pickup makers. But you can get ceramic magnets any shape and size you want.

I ordered some custom sized ceramic a few years ago from SensMag in China. I didn't have to order a whole lot either, but you want to order enough to offset the shipping costs.

You can also do the P-90 type setup with two magnets facing longer poles.

You can get un-oriented alnico magnets.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

      Thanks for the response

I think I''l have to design according with the normal magnets shape and orientation, for now.
but I'd like to know if all alnicos have a directional grain, apparently not.

      Thanks David

        Gabe,

most of the China made single coil pickups I've replaced are like those that you want.

And I suspect there's a good reason they were replaced too...
