  • Coil and magnet shorting out

IF the coil wire shorts out to the magnet is that going to cause problems?

That depends on how fussy you are. Coil short are commonplace on older Fender pickups. Folks live with them. If the grounded end of the coil is the start you can get by maybe. If the start is your hot lead then anytime a string touches an exposed magnet the sound will cut off.

Thanks for the reply David. So, it wont change the sound? I am fussy enough to not want the magnets to short out, though. I tried rattle can lacquer and it didn't work. Any suggestions?

        Tape your bobbins before winding.
That is what most of us do.
If you do a search, this has come up many times.

          LowNote,
You'll want the thinnest, toughest tape you can find. Packing tape works well as does the thinner masking tape. Lay a strip down on a cutting surface and trim the width to a tiny bit more (1/64") than the height of your bobbin using a straight edge and an X-acto knife. Wrap a single turn around your bobbin keeping it centered so that no magnet is exposed. The ends of the bobbins are particularly important to cover up.

I prefer Kapton Tape, thin (around .003") and strong. Wish they sold it in a strat bobbin height though.

              Jeff,
You can buy polymide in any height you need by mm sizes off eBay. My kapton is around 1.5mils x 1/2" but I've been meaning to get some 16mm as well.

Thanks David, the little things that save time are great to come across.

I still like my waxed floral tape.
It is 1/2 inch wide but it stretches to fit on Strat and tele sized bobbins.

                      I use thin paper tape.

The short can change the tone.

Guitar Jones had the best tape of all, 1/4 inch black scotch type tape. Real cheap and absolutely perfect. We ought to ask Mojo to carry it since they deal with WSC. I have a few rolls left.

                              Hello,
I have been using thin strips of waxed paper, secured with hair dryer. It can be cut slightly wider and it snugs right in avoiding contact with poles.
