How braindead must the guy be who checked and approved this?

Actually, I think the patentability has more to do with function. Adopting an aesthetic to fit a circumstance.

its an odd one but not unusual these days.
mosrite made a single coil similar to a P-90 that fit in the same size cover thier humbucker pickup used, I wont name any other recent makers but one of them has been making a humbucker size singlecoil since the 70s.
