It's a picture of a Strat; one that was built so that you unbolt the bottom 1/4 of the body and the entire pickguard and electronics slides out. There was a closet full of pickguards with different pickup setups ready to be swapped in. Anyone remember this?

Rob,
I'm only remembering a Les Paul that sort of fits that description.
there are other ideas and links to earlier pages here: http://music-electronics-forum.com/t22245/

I'm almost positive it was a Strat. Each loaded pickguard was attached to a matching hunk of body that bolted to the guitar with the same 4-bolt pattern used for a Strat neck.

Most of the pictures on the MEF Server, got wiped out here a while back!
If you have a router, that would be easy enough to make a way to slide pickup, or pickguard assemblies, in and out.

Similar concept. Mine is actually wood. The cavity in the photo is lined with metal. Mine has a wood body with medal rails that the cartridge slides on. The Ramtrak guitar I got sold for $1200 in the mid 90's and 250 were made.
