  • Alnico Magnet Strengths

I wanted to amend this list as I found it very useful in getting started with building pickups. Kevin (Guitarforce) put in some work compiling it and was generous in sharing it in the first place. This is copied from the MLP forum but I know Kevin had put the info on this forum as well.

My own finding from a recent batch of custom magnets are added in red. I also only wrote down the north face range from lowest reading to highest along the length. I found the North edge to be consistently the stronger side but it's easy enough to manipulate either face to read higher/lower when charging them.

I think this is for bar magnets only, didn't see anything otherwise.
Also I would be more interested in seeing the readings after a soak period.
You show A3s as strong as A2s, and I have never found that to be the case.
If you showed the gauss of each, A2 Compared to A3, a week later, after charging, we would probably see the real Gauss.
Showing the gauss reading immediately after coming off the charger, IMO are inflated high readings!
    My $.02.

I was thinking exactly this but wanted to show the charges right off the Neos anyway. It's been a while since I took the initial readings so will go check and see if I marked the magnets when I put them back on the bricks. Regardless, I'll do a few more sets and see how they hold up after a week or so.

          To All. . .

Can any share their knowledge as to why the charge levels/potential on unoriented A5's is significantly less than for oriented A5's? Are there situations where it would be preferable or more suitable to use one vs the other in a pickup?

          Just curious. . .

The oriented magnets have a charging field introduced during the casting/cooling process to get them to be pre-biased. I have to do more testing to see the real impact on tone.

Here you can find the skinny about alnico mags. Look isotropic and anisotropic in manufacturing process.
