  • Pickup Noise

    Hey guys,

I have been playing my DC-30 at about 9 o'clock and have notice that when I am playing my strat, I can tap on the pickguard and I hear the tapping noise carry through the amp. I have also noticed that noise on the body of the guitar if you knock on it. I have also noticed it on a G&L tele with humbuckers , Fender Nocaster, Bill Nash tele, and 4 other strats. I have also played through a Blues Jr and a Divided by 13 RSA 23 and still hear the tapping. All pickups played are potted, RWRP, and guitars sheilded.

    1. I am curious if you guys hear the same noise as me?
    2. What if any can be done to combat the noise?
    3. Any Ideas?

    Chris

I hear noises all the time and voices. But setting that aside, it sounds like a normal situation. You might like to pot the pickups again making sure that all trapped air is removed.

I bet if you remove the strings you wont hear it! Even solid body guitars are acoustic instruments. The body vibrates like everything else. You can also hear it on guitars with fender style trems because of the springs.

I would expect that if you tap the body on a guitar, you will hear it. Make the guitar from something dense like lead, then you wont hear it. But it wont sound good either.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein
