Mark- After further thought I have decided that the through-body length for the strat and tele bridges would be included in the total length, even with a sharp kink going into the body. As you bend the string that sharp kink would be pulled away from the body.
I got out one on my teles last night and was comparing the "feel" while bending notes. And yes I had to push the strings a lot further to raise the pitch of the strings a comparable amount. When pushing the B string to the 5th string position the pitch went up 3 semi-tones. On my wraparound guitars that bend would raise the pitch 4 or 5 semi-tones.
As to which is better it is a matter of taste. With a tele you have more precision in your bends with the longer string lengths. With the wraparound bridge you need to be right on the money or your pitch will be off.

P.S. When I fire up my desktop computer I will move this thread to the Guitar Tech forum.
