  • Difference between Filtertrons and regular humbuckers

    Hello,
I was just looking at some pickup winding kits. The Filtertrons kits looked to be just to be a regular humbucker kit, without the cover. So what is the difference that makes such a difference in price ? Seems you could just put a Filtertron cover on an alnico chinese humbucker and have the same thing.

Gretsch Filtertron's use a smaller bobbin than a Gibson style humbucker & bigger pole screws along with the mounting screws that go through the covers .
Are you talking about the full sized humbucker like comes in some of the 5120's "gretschbuckers" ?

        Also:
Somewhere in some forum, someone stated that original Filtertrons were wound to 3000 turns per coil,
but Ray Butts rewound Chet Atkins' bridge pickup to 6000 turns per coil.
How's that for a definitive citation?

What I found particularly interesting about the 1957 Butts patent was the inclusion of a design very similar to the "Railhammer". In other words, one 3-string coil around adjustable slugs, and a second 3-string coil around a bar.

Here's some FilerTron Specs that's kept on the B/H Resources thread.
I think You could use these specs for regular humbucker coils, if you want the filterTron sound.

I just read the Butts patent myself.
I found interesting the claim that, even including the capacitance of a typical shielded cable to amplifier input, the pickup's resonant frequency is over 20KHz.
Is that only with the parallel coil wiring option?
