If it was me I'd use short magnets, short baseplate and make the height adjustment thru the holes where the wood screws go thru, sorta like the batwing SG idea. The shorter baseplate and magnets would be short enough to sink down into the bucker rout.

As with a Les Paul neck? It gets a little thin... here's the first one I'm just now fitting.

You can't drop the height of the pickup below the actual thickness of the P90 bobbin because it will hit the humbucker rout. That PRS has the strings very high up off the top of the guitar, my 335 type guitar doesn't have room for a P90 bobbin thickness and could only use a P90 if it were routed and a short P90 cover used.
      You mean like that? ^

Way, way back in 2000... In 1998 is when I designed the cover for this, splicing a dog-eared P-90 cover (minus the ears) to a humbucker moutning ring, for the first prototype. It's still around here, somewhere...

Just uploaded this, done by the owner of the SG pictured above that I fitted with a pair of hand-made covers a couple years ago. Replaced the covers a few weeks ago with 3D prints above.

Not the pickup itself, but the cover that mounts it.
